this blog has long extolled the virtues of free net labels such as pcm. the idea of giving away music for free without commercial restraints and pressures, and without regard for current fashions and trends something is something to be applauded in this day and age. pinecone moonshine is one of the very finest proponents of this ideology with a string of high quality releases to their name from respected artists such as macc, dgoHn, sub, parallel, fracture and tv_g himself. run by Nic TVG and Tracey, pcm is a growing collection of drum funk and other abstract and ambient music. the majority of the tracks are melancholy collages of noise, heavily processed samples, and atmospherics driven by broken break beats and heavy sub. free jazz, early electronics, blues, and post punk are noticeable influences in several of the pieces. drumfunk is an aquired taste, of that there can be no doubt, but it is a sub genre that rewards the open-minded listener. with the emphasis on real instruments and sounds and careful processing and editing of breaks and samples it is a style that is drum & bass in its very purest form.
if you have not encountered drum funk before then this mix will serve as a perfect introduction to it, and will hopefully spur you on to check some more of it out. if on the other hand you are the biggest aficionado of this style then this will be a treat indeed. enjoy.
