12" Of The Week // ASC - TMA-1 EP

ASC - TMA-1 EP [Space Cadets]

TMA-1
Aqualoop
Esper
Sarang

I'll spare you the usual waffle here and keep it brief. If you had a read of EDJ's 'Alternative Drum & Bass Awards' then you'll know that ASC was one of the 'Editor's Picks' as Producer of the year. 2011 was astonishing in terms of the sheer number of releases he put out across multiple genres and the ridiculously high quality of them all. Well, he doesn't seem to be one to rest on his laurels as this is already his second single of the year, following on from the superb 10" on Samurai off-shoot Horo.

Space Cadets has carved out an envibaly distinguished and high quality niche for itself at the more experimental end of the drum & bass spectrum in the short time that it's been active. ASC's productions are a perfect fit for the label and it's sound and the 4 tracks contained on this 12" are deep, ethereal and luscious pieces of ambientish autonomica that slot into the, albeit small, back catalogue with ease. His style seems to interchange at will between this more laid back dreamy appraoch and the harder, more abrasive sounds akin to the recent 12" on Samurai Red Seal. It is with these softer sounds that his strength really lies though in this blog's opinion and these four are some of the finest examples of it yet. Coupled with the insanely good value a 4 track 12" offers the discerning vinyl collector, this release should be a must for any d&b connoisseur worth their salt.

Space Cadets for the win, up there with MJAZZ for the true side of drum and bass for 2012.

Only buy this if you're a serious musical head.
